As Chief Executive Officer, Alan is responsible for the implementation of the company’s strategy, operations, and overall performance.

Before co-founding Aspen Energy, Alan held progressively senior positions with a leading Mexican Solar company as a Photovoltaic System Design Engineer, Sales Engineer, Saltillo Regional Sales Manager, and Franchise Owner. He began his career in the banking sector as a Sustainability Analyst with Grupo Financiero Banorte.

Alan holds a degree in Engineering with a specialization in Environmental Technology. He completed his studies at Baylor University in Texas and the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico.

  • Co-Founder and CTO

As Chief Technology Officer, Bertram is responsible for all aspects of system engineering, design, construction, operation, and maintenance.

Bertram is a solar, storage, and microgrid system design Engineer and North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) certified solar installation professional.

Before co-founding Aspen Energy, he was a Photovoltaic Solar Design Engineer at leading Mexican solar companies, as well as, an Instructor for Solar Energy International (SEI).

Bertram holds a Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Technology from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and a Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability Engineering from the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico.

Thesis: “The value of energy resilience that solar microgrids can provide to Puerto Rico”.

  • Co-Founder and CFO

As Chief Financial Officer, Jarrett is responsible for finance, taxation, risk management, financial reporting, and investor relations.

Before co-founding Aspen Energy, Jarrett held the role of Business Development Representative for TC Energy’s Power and Storage business in Mexico. He was responsible for the origination and evaluation of opportunities to develop and invest in power and storage projects, as well as the acquisition of operating natural gas and renewable power generation assets.

Prior to joining TC Energy, he was an energy project developer and consultant responsible for raising capital to fund utility-scale renewable energy projects and the sale of distributed solar generation systems and electrical engineering services.

He began his career in the Canadian Oil & Gas sector and provided expert advisory in the assessment and quantification of environmental liabilities and risk. Specifically, the estimation of near-term environmental costs and asset retirement obligations in support of mergers & acquisitions, corporate risk management, and regulatory reporting.

Jarrett holds a Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Development and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

Thesis: “Environmental Liability Assessment and Accounting in the Upstream Oil and Gas Sector – Multiple Linear Regression Model to Assess Wellbore Abandonment Cost and Liability”.

Resilient distributed solar + energy storage systems

In an electrical grid, the “distribution system” refers to the low- and medium-voltage power lines, service transformers, and other equipment that deliver electricity to your home and business — it is the last stop before electricity is consumed. A resilient distributed energy system (DER) utilizes local resources such as customer-owned solar photovoltaics (PV) and battery storage systems to quickly reconfigure power flows and recover electricity services during disturbance events. In other words, it is able to prepare for and adapt to changing conditions, to withstand and rapidly recover from disturbances like cyber-attacks, brownouts, and blackouts caused by accidents, weak electrical grids, and natural disasters (e.g. hurricanes).

Solar + Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) provide multiple revenue streams and benefits helping to significantly decrease energy costs and minimize losses incurred due to brownouts, blackouts, and poor quality electricity that can damage sensitive equipment.

Aspen - So much more than a tree…

It’s hard to decide what is most memorable about Aspen trees: from the vibrant red, yellow and orange colors in the fall, to the tall, tube-like clusters of white stands, or the sound of the quaking leaves as they blow and tremble in the wind. Regardless of what comes to mind when you think of Aspen tress. They hold the title of the most widespread and resilient tree in North America. From the US Midwest, across Canada, north into Alaska, and down through to Arizona and the high mountains of central Mexico, aspen trees dot the edge of conifer forests in clusters or clones throughout the continent.

One Aspen tree is actually only a small part of a much larger, resilient organism.

A stand or group of aspen trees is considered a singular organism with the main life force underground in the extensive root system. Before a single aspen trunk appears above the surface, the root system may lie dormant for many years until the conditions are just right, including sufficient sunlight. Even if the trees of an aspen stand are wiped out, it is very difficult to permanently extinguish an aspen’s root system due to the rapid rate at which it reproduces.

“Sustainability, resiliency, and clean energy independence is the reason why we named our company Aspen Energy.”
